Top Five Fitness Trends for Business Travellers in 2018

Now in its twelfth year, the American College of Sports Medicine surveys thousands of fitness professionals to forecast the next year’s most popular fitness trends.

Last year’s no 1 Wearable Technology remains in the top 3 whilst High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) jumps to the top spot.

1.  HIIT

High-Intensity Interval training simply means exercising at an intensity that keeps your heart rate high and taking only short breaks between each work interval so your heart rate doesn’t drop too much. It’s ideal for business travellers because you don’t need a gym, specialized equipment or a big chunk of time. 2. Group Training

The key elements of group training are the motivation and accountability working out with others provides. Contact the running or swimming club in the area you’re staying and ask to join their training sessions. Or you could encourage fellow business travellers to join you for a lunchtime walk – the exposure to natural light will help with your jet lag too.

3. Wearable Technology

Wearable technology remains popular and data accuracy continues to improve. Fitness trackers, smartwatches, heart rate monitors and GPS tracking devices are readily available and the perfect fitness companion for the business traveller. If you can’t find anyone else to work out with you use your tech to motivate and keep you accountable.

4. Body Weight Training

Another win for the business traveller as you don’t have to lug any equipment around. Bodyweight exercises include squats, press ups, lunges, planks, mountain climbers, squat thrusts, burpees and star jumps none of which you need a vast amount of space or time to do.

5. Strength training

Body weight exercises such as press ups and squats are a form of strength training or you can ramp it up with resistance bands. They’re super light and come in a range of lengths and resistance levels.

Other new fitness trends to look out for in 2018 include live streaming classes, a return to play and improved apps.

Live stream classes are ideal for the time-starved business traveller as it’s a great way to work out from anywhere and connect with others worldwide. A return to play simply means a more fun, spirited and mindful approach to movement. And improved apps will result in higher quality content and more engaged communities – if you don’t like working out alone the online world means you don’t have to.
